Sheet metal production
Feature inspection

The position and dimensions of features such as holes and slots in automotive sheet metal components are critical. Some of these features serve as reference locations for positioning parts at later stages in the assembly process, while others are used to attach trim components to the body.

Features can be measured on a CMM using touch trigger probing. Metris Camio offers extensive sheet metal inspection capabilities. Through the software’s transparent interface with QDAS and QC-calc, measurement results can be readily used for further statistical process control.

3D inspection of sheet metal features

Laser scanning, in particular the Metris XC cross scanner, provides a time-saving alternative to touch probe measurements. When using a touch trigger probe, each feature requires multiple displacements of the CMM in different directions, while most features can be scanned during a single continuous movement of the CMM. This reduces measurement throughput time with up to 40%.

To increase feature inspection productivity and flexibility, the K-Robot system equipped with a laser scanner may be the right choice. This automated solution offers fast and consistent in-production-line inspection. Metrology-level scanning accuracy in combination with real-time scanner position tracking provides a detailed 3D representation of the scanned object. In-line robotic scanning is ideally suited for systematic monitoring of production quality.

(Mating) surface inspection

Sheet metal is not just about features, but also about shape. The external shape is important to get the looks of the final vehicle right. The shape of the mating surfaces is important in order to get a good fit between assembled parts. In both cases, laser scanning provides far more data and better insight into surface related information.

Metris LC/XC scanners  are compatible with Metris’ complete range of LK and C3 CMMs. With a high-speed CMM, the travel time between features can be minimized. Metris LC/XC scanners are fully supported in the Camio CMM software.

Focus Scan supports LC/XC scanners that are mounted on third party CMMs, including Mitutoyo, Brown and Sharpe, DEA, Zeiss, Wenzel, Mora and Dukin. Metris additionally offers a wide range of integration options and solutions, and supports integration on Renishaw and Metrolog controllers. Through Focus Automation, the entire measurement and inspection process – using Focus Inspection - can be automated.
