Weidmann Plastics selects K-Scan for inspection of plastic parts
Weidmann Plastics, a company based in Switzerland with 625 employees, has recently chosen a Metris K-Scan Handheld scanner for mobile optical 3D measurements. This portable K-scan system as such complements a Metris LC50 laser scanner on their Wenzel LH1210 installation . The point cloud data resulting from both systems is further analyzed in Focus Inspection and Focus Reverse Engineering, the Metris point cloud analysis software.

The K-Scan is a state-of-the-art mobile measurement system, based on the K-series Optical CMM and a Metris 3D laser scanner. The Optical CMM camera has a measurement volume of 17m3 or a range of up to 6m. The flexible K-Scan scans the part resulting in a point cloud with thousands points of data. The data is then filtered and used for part to CAD inspection - where the scanned data is compared to the original CAD file- or reverse engineering.

For very detailed inspection of small plastic parts with tight tolerances, Weidmann uses the stationary CMM with the Metris LC50 with an accuracy of about 15μm.

Metris is the only manufacturer of optical 3D measurement systems that offers us the combination of high accuracy and flexibility ", comments Dr Harke, director of the Metrology department.

In the September, Weidmann organizes an in-house workshop for the interested manufacturers form the Swiss composite and plastics industry, where the new system and its applications will be extensively demonstrated. Interested people can register through Weidmann.
